Common questions about DOT inspections and compliance.
Commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) are required to have an annual inspection per FMCSA regulation 396.17. The inspection must be performed at least once every 12 months. Some states may have additional requirements or more frequent inspection intervals.
If your vehicle fails inspection, it cannot legally operate until the deficiencies are corrected. We'll provide you with a detailed list of issues that need to be addressed. Once repairs are completed, we'll re-inspect the vehicle and issue the inspection sticker upon passing.
A typical DOT inspection takes 1-2 hours depending on the vehicle type and condition. Tractor-trailer combinations take longer than single-unit vehicles. If repairs are needed, additional time will be required. We recommend scheduling early in the day to allow time for any necessary repairs.
Yes, upon passing inspection we provide the official inspection sticker that must be displayed on the vehicle, as well as a detailed inspection report. You should keep the inspection report with your vehicle records for at least 14 months as required by FMCSA regulations.
Absolutely. As a full-service diesel repair shop, we can address most issues found during inspection on-site. This includes brake repairs, lighting issues, suspension components, exhaust repairs, and more. Our goal is to get you back on the road compliant and safe as quickly as possible.
Before your inspection, ensure all lights are working, check tire condition and pressure, verify brake operation, and make sure all required safety equipment (fire extinguisher, triangles, spare fuses) is present.
